Doctor
TAGUCHI Shinya
The purpose of anesthesia is not only to put patients to sleep and relieve their pain, but also to ensure that they can undergo surgery safely. Prior to surgery, a medical history interview, electrocardiogram, respiratory function tests, blood tests, and x-rays are carried out and we plan for safer anesthesia and general management. During surgery, the anesthesia depth is adjusted, and the cardiopulmonary functions such as breathing and blood pressure are stabilized to protect the body. We also use nerve blocks and epidural anesthesia to reduce postoperative pain. We provide high quality medical care, emphasizing unified systemic management throughout the perioperative period, from preoperative to postoperative.
Message from Dr. TAGUCHI Shinya
Our job is to protect patients from the painful stress of surgery, which is why dialogue with the attending physician, patient and surgeon is essential. The operating room at ICCRC is bright and our staff are committed to providing better medical care. I hope that we can ease your anxiety before the surgery and make you feel better than when you came to the hospital.
Types of Anesthesia
General anesthesia
General anesthesia is a method of losing consciousness by administering an inhalant or intravenous anesthetic. Since breathing will be almost stopped during this procedure, we will also secure the airway and manage breathing. During the surgery, the patient will be constantly monitored to maintain a stable general condition. Epidural anesthesia and nerve blocks are often used in combination to relieve postoperative pain. We also manage patients who are in an unstable general condition.
Spinal subarachnoid anesthesia
This is also called lower body anesthesia or lumbar anesthesia. In order to avoid damaging the spinal cord, a fine needle is inserted into the spinal cavity and local anesthetic is used to paralyze the lower half of the body. While this anesthesia is in effect (3 to 6 hours), you will lose sensation and will not be able to move your legs. This is mainly used for surgeries that last from one to three hours.
*Anesthesia may not be possible if you have undergone spinal surgery or if you are taking blood thinning medication.
Epidural anesthesia
This is an anesthesia method in which anesthetic is placed in the epidural space near the spinal cord in the spine to partially relieve pain along the spread of nerves. A catheter (thin tube) is inserted into the back and anesthesia is administered. *Anesthesia may not be possible if you have undergone spinal surgery or are taking blood thinning medication.
Peripheral nerve block
This is a method of injecting anesthetic along nerve runs to relieve pain in that area. Peripheral nerve block alone can be used for a short surgery, but it may be used in combination with general anesthesia for pain relief after the surgery. We use an ultrasound device (echo) and electrical stimulation to monitor the nerves and try to avoid complications.
