Clinical Department

Orthopaedic Surgery

In Division of Orthopaedic Oncology, we diagnose and treat bone and soft tissue tumors arising in the extremities and the trunk. Bone and soft tissue tumors, particularly malignant tumor (Sarcoma), are rare tumors, therefore diagnosis and treatment of the disease demand knowledge and expertise due to difficulties in specialized treatments. All members in our team have been well trained for the disease, and will provide high-quality care for the patients.

Medical Services

Specialists certified by the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) provide cutting-edge treatments for bone and soft tissue tumors. The average number of surgeries performed is approximately 200 cases annually, and is increasing every year. Instead of a single-departmental approach, a multidisciplinary approach of a tumor board is recommended for the management of the disease, especially malignant tumors (sarcomas). We actively participate in the hospital tumor board to discuss cases with other departments, and identify potential issues for each patient, ensuring the best possible treatment strategy and outcomes for patients.

Treatment policy

Recent advances in diagnostic imaging and surgical margin assessment have improved treatment outcomes in patients, as indicated by an increase in survival and functional preservation. However, since some cases are still difficult to treat, we work closely with other departments, including medical oncology, pediatrics, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, etc., to discuss treatment options. Taking advantage of the multidisciplinary expertise of university hospitals, our goal is to improve treatment outcomes in patients with refractory tumors.

Specialities

We specialize in treatments of bone and soft tissue tumors as well as metastatic bone tumors. In addition, we are currently performing multiple translational researches such as the development of novel treatment approach for sarcomas, identifying new molecular targets and stem cell research in sarcomas.

Targeted Diseases

  • Bone and soft tissue tumors, sarcoma, metastatic bone tumors
  • Sports related injuries in knees and ankles, including ligament, meniscus & cartilage injuries
  • Upper limb disorders, such as rotator cuff tears, ligament injuries and osteoarthritis

Advanced/Specialized Treatments

  • Limb preserving surgery for malignant bone and soft tissue tumors (sarcoma) with reconstruction using tumor endoprosthesis / recycled bone grafting
  • Arthroscopic treatment for sports related injuries and upper limb disorders, such as ligament reconstruction, meniscal or cartilage repair and rotator cuff repair
  • Microsurgery for hand disorders
  • Rehabilitation to improve affected limb and ordinary functions
