Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I apply from overseas?
    • Yes. Patients living outside Japan may contact the International Medical Communication Center (IMCC) or medical coordinators before traveling . We can review your inquiry, explain the required documents, and advise whether treatment or a second opinion at Kobe University Hospital may be possible.
  • Do I need a referral letter?
    • No, not always. A referral letter is helpful, but you may contact IMCC or medical coordinators even if you do not have one at the time of your initial inquiry. If available, please share any relevant medical information, such as medical records, imaging studies, pathology reports, or a summary of your condition and treatment history. We will review the available information and let you know if any additional documents are needed.
  • Can I receive an online consultation?
    • Yes, online consultation may be available in selected cases. This can be useful for obtaining a second opinion or discussing whether treatment in Japan would be appropriate before traveling. Availability depends on the medical condition, the department involved, and the documents provided in advance.
  • How long does the process take?
    • Once IMCC receives your inquiry, we will assess whether your case can be accepted at Kobe University Hospital and provide an initial response on the same day whenever possible, or at least within a few days. If the case is accepted, additional time may be needed to arrange appointments, travel, and admission.
  • Can a family member accompany me?
    • Yes. A family member or another support person may accompany the patient. However, the number of accompanying persons may be limited depending on the patient’s condition, room availability, and hospital policies. We recommend discussing this with your medical coordinator or with IMCC in advance.
